Director is not the most important person in your crew. “Well”, you ask, “If not the director…then who?”

The Cinematographer? No! The Production Manager? No! The Production Designer? No! The Executive Producer (never call an Executive Producer to his/her face, part of the crew for you’ll never work with him/her again in your life)?

Back to crew: The Grip? The Gaffer? The Editor? The Music/Composer? The hair/Makeup? The Craftservice?

No. No. No. No. No. No. No. If not them, “then who”?

The SOUNDMAN is super-super-super important but is never given the respect that he/she is due. Let me explain.

Sound! Audio! Clarity! Synchronization!

I beg you. I beseech you. Please, Please, get an excellent Soundman/woman for your shoot.

You are spending way too much time thinking about some new camera (HD, DSLR, Sony, Red, 4K, 5K, CMOS-Chip, etc.) to use and way to little time thinking about the audio and synchronization.

Sound people are not expensive to hire. They are everywhere. They have their own equipment. They are reliable. They have little-to-no egos. But make sure you get a professional, who has done this before, for your shoot.

Very few, if any, Cinematographers come with their own $40,000-$200,000 cameras for your shoot. You basically (A) hire a Cinematographer and then you (B) rent the cameras.

Thus, you can only afford to pay your Soundman $1.4K-$2.0K per week. This includes (A) his/her salary, (B) use of all his/her equipment (he/she must be one of the 99 out of 100 who has their own equipment) and (C) out of the $1.4K-$2.0k per week he/she pays his/her assistant (Boom-man, Mike-man, Cable-man) $0.3K-$0.5K per week.

Bottom-line: For your shoot. Get an excellent soundman, (your cinematographer will know many as should your local film commissioner) who comes with his/her own equipment, and on the set pay attention to when he/she says “we gotta do the take again”.
