Zoe Saldaña Discusses Gamora’s New “Spunk” in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

“I’m surprised Gamora appears as much in this episode as she did in Avengers: Infinity War,” explains star Zoe Saldaña, who echoes that He thought that her role in the film would be minimal, she would only join “just to come over for two scenes and then say hi to everyone.” Instead, Gamora has an important role throughout the film as she doesn’t just help them the Guardians in their attempt to rescue Rocket, but also help Peter Quinn Quill (aka Star-Lord) close the book about their past relationship.

In Avengers: Infinity War, Gamora is taken to her adoptive father, Thanos, to retrieve the stone from get the soul so you can complete the Infinity Gauntlet.The only way to get this stone is to kill Gamora, which he does (and when Quill finds out what happened, he lets his emotions take over and causes Thanos to collapse – a story for another day) . But in Avengers: Endgame, the Gamora of the past returns, thanks to a Steal Time heist. Realizing the evil in Thanos’ behavior, he teams up with his adoptive sister Nebula to help the rest of the Avengers defeat him once and for all.

Quill is happy that Gamora is alive again. The only problem is that she’s not the Gamora he knew and loved.This Gamora was never part of the Guardians team and doesn’t have the same memories and feelings that Quill struggles with, although he does his best to connect with her.

“I think Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 will definitely have a lot more in common with Gamora from Vol. 3,” Saldaña continues. “I find Gamora very exciting because she is very independent, wild and different.She has a courage Gamora never really had, and I hope viewers find that fresh.”

Speaking of being stuck, Executive Producer Sara Smith admits that Gamora is now dealing with more internal conflict than ever. The guards are strangers to her.”I think the other interesting thing Zoe brings to this film is the actual conflict that the character has to deal with,” explains Smith. “She’s sort of stuck with a group of people who knew her as someone else, and she’s not someone she recognizes. So sometimes it’s really very emotional and quite powerful to see these nuances in Zoe’s performance and her struggles.”

Gamora appears in Part 3 after Nebula turns to her sister (now part of the Ravagers) to help them save Rocket’s life. It’s a surprising turn of events for everyone, especially Quill, but for Nebula it’s just a family favor.Leaving the past behind, the sisters unleash a whole new dynamic.

“We learned something in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 from hearing the story of Nebula and Gamora that Nebula isn’t actually the villain,” Gunn continues. “Now they have grown up again and Nebula has grown a lot. We see Nebula and Gamora as they are now, and they have changed their roles from those in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1.”

But if you expect a happy family reunion between sisters, think again. The greatest affection they show each other is just a slight nod and grunt, something that suits the duo perfectly.

“I love the moments because they’re so simple yet so revealing about their relationship,” says Karen Gillan. Feel it inside you.It comes out in a very nonchalant, little gesture and noise, but it’s loaded with so much more because these sisters love each other, and they’ve been through so much together.”

And on the topic of love, it’s Quill who has the toughest time seeing Gamora again. He lost the woman he loved, only for her to come back and not even remember his name. Chris Pratt calls this new turn for Gamora, “One of the more interesting arcs in the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
