Cinematography and Culinary Arts – Black Beans and Bokeh

In cinematography, bokeh (BOH-kə), Japanese: [boke]) is the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens. Bokeh has been defined as “the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light”.

In this Food Porn and Filmmaking video we demonstrate the bokeh effect by making a black beans recipe and shooting the process on our HitchHiker and HitchHiker Mini handheld support rigs with the lens set to a very shallow depth of field.

Image capture was done with a Canon T2i shooting at 60 frames per second to slow down and smooth out our handheld work.

Here’s the black beans recipe I got from a Dominican girlfriend. She didn’t last, but the black beans recipe she learned from her mother has endured.

Dominican Black Beans

1 can black beans
4 cloves garlic
1 yellow or white onion
1 Tablespoon or 2 squares of chicken bouillon
1/4 cup olive oil

Mince the garlic and chop the onion then brown them in a pot in the olive oil.

Add the black beans, two cans of water and the chicken bouillon. Bring to a boil for one minute then reduce to a simmer for about 45 minutes. As the water evaporates, scrape the bottom of the pot or pan to keep the beans from sticking.

Serve over spanish yellow rice with grilled chicken, steak or pork or on their own as a dip with tortilla chips.
