DAMNED IF YOU DO DAMNED IF YOU DON’T
THE HELP may very well be this years award season darling. Already having garnered nominations from The Globes, The Producers Guild, The Writers Guild and The Screen Actors Guild, it is all but a shoe in for a number of Oscar Nominations including Best Picture as well as some individual performance nominees for Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer and maybe even a song nominated by Mary J. Blige. After last years Academy Awards which saw no African American nominees, you would think the Black community would rally behind these three Oscar hopefuls. (This is where you insert the Big BUT) BUT whispers among the African American Community have pointed shame at a movie that depicts a period and time that some would rather forget. Why you may ask, well you will only have to travel two years back where one Mo’nique received the Academy Award for her role in PRECIOUS where she played a not so flattering depiction of an African American single mothers. As she got up on the stage wearing a blue dress with a flower in her hair, evoking the very spirit of Hattie McDaniels who was was the first African-American actress to win an Academy Award. She won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role of Mammy in Gone with the Wind (1939).. The Irony is that Hattie McDaniels Blacktree is at all the hottest events on the planet (award shows, movie premieres and press junkets, fashion shows, etc.) and now BLACKTREE ON TV brings stars to YOU on Soul of the South! Watch Full episodes below, and tune in!
